Overview
The Tree Warden is the municipal official responsible for the care and management of all public trees in the Town of Westford. This role is mandated by Massachusetts law and includes overseeing the planting, maintenance, pruning, and removal of trees on public lands and rights-of-way.

What the Tree Warden Does
Managing the care, maintenance, and removal of trees on public property
Assessing public trees for safety and health
Planning and supervising tree planting programs
Overseeing hazardous tree removals and storm response
Coordinating with Public Works and other town departments
Responding to resident questions and requests

As part of our ongoing commitment to expanding and enhancing the community tree canopy, we are offering free tree seedlings to residents while supplies last. This program is a great way to add beautiful, climate-resilient trees to your yard and support local environmental health.

🌳 How It Works

Residents can sign up to request seedlings using our online registration form. You’ll be able to select your preferred tree species and the number of seedlings you’d like (subject to availability).

FAQs 

Q: What is a Public Shade Tree?
A: A Public Shade Tree is any tree located within the public right of way in the Town. Shade Tree laws can be found here.

Q: Who is responsible for trees near utilities?
A: Utility companies often perform trimming near power lines, but the Tree Warden coordinates oversight and safety standards.

Q: Can I plant a tree in the public right-of-way?
A: Planting on public land requires approval through the Public Works Department in consultation with the Tree Warden.

Q: Can I remove or trim a tree in front of my house?
A: If the tree is within the public right of way you cannot remove or trim the tree without a permit from the Tree Warden.

Q: How far from the road is my property line?
A: It depends - every road can be different.  Please reach out to the Tree Warden prior to trimming or removing trees in front of your house and we can help make the determination on whether the tree is a Public Shade Tree or not.

Q: How do I request a tree inspection or pruning?
