In 1991, EPA published a regulation to control lead and copper in drinking water. This regulation is known as the Lead and Copper Rule (also referred to as the LCR). Since 1991 the LCR has undergone various revisions.   EPA's 2021 Revised Lead and Copper Rule improves protections for children and communities from the risks of lead exposure by better protecting children at schools and child care facilities, identifying lead service lines, and empowering communities through information.   As part of the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR), Community Water Systems were required to complete a Service Line Inventory (SLI) by October 16, 2024 and make that information available to the public.

The Westford Water Department completed a Service Line Inventory (SLI) and submitted the SLI to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection before October 16, 2024.  An extensive review of Water Department records indicated that there were no service lines of lead, Galvanized lines Requiring Replacement (GRR) or unknown materials.   Below are links to Mass DEP's approval statement for non-lead service lines and the Westford service line inventory.  For questions regarding the service line inventory, contact the Westford Water Department at water@westfordma.gov or at 978-692-5529.
