Route 40 Corridor Study
The Town of Westford is creating a vision plan for the future of Route 40 (Groton Road). Route 40 is a Major Arterial roadway that provides connections to Route 119 in the town of Groton and Route 3 in the town of Chelmsford. The planning process will, as coordinated through the Land Use Management Department, be carried out by an Advisory Committee set to conduct a critical review of existing conditions and patterns of development for the study area. The Committee will work with Innes Land Strategies Group, Inc., a planning consultant firm assisting the Town with this project, to provide a vision for the corridor that results in greater harmony and connectivity between new and existing uses. Westford received $106,000 from the Housing Choice Program to create this plan.
Project Objectives
The Route 40 Corridor Project seeks to establish a community-driven vision to guide future development projects and municipal investments to result in a mix of uses, including residential, commercial, industrial, and open space, that enhance the character of the area. A guiding vision will help ensure an orderly transition from an area currently characterized by disjointed auto-oriented design to a mixed-use, multi-modal area, with a focus on improved connections, small-to-mid-sized commercial development, and modest-scale residential development. By the end of the project in June 2026, the Committee will accomplish several goals, such as to preserve and/or enhance the character of the area, to offer opportunities for new growth, and to promote a more balanced tax base. The Project will result in concepts and recommendations in the short, medium, and long-term that provide the roadmap for future infrastructure improvements, economic development investments, and potential zoning or other bylaw amendments to encourage new development opportunities for existing and future residents and business owners.
Opportunities to Participate
There will be several opportunities for participation in the project, including two public workshops, three town-wide surveys, and a presentation reviewing the final plan recommendations.
A Design Open House will be rescheduled ASAP and will be held at Stony Brook School, 9 Farmer Way, Westford, MA 01886. This is a drop-in event; please feel free to stop by any time and stay as long as you like.
