Linked and Livable Neighborhoods: Littleton Road

Figure 1

*The study area is indicated in yellow in the map above. It stretches from Kimball Farm to Tadmuck Road and from I-495 to about a half-mile south of Littleton Road. In the map above, areas that have been rezoned for multi-family are shown with a pink overlay (the zoning in the remainder of the study area has not changed to allow multi-family housing). The study area is approximate. It indicates areas where pedestrian, bicycle, and trail improvements may be useful to connect future development to opportunities for shopping, work, school, recreation, etc.

LINKED AND LIVABLE NEIGHBORHOODS: LITTLETON ROAD

The Town of Westford is creating a Pedestrian Master Plan for the parts of town in and around the town’s MBTA Communities Multi-Family Overlay District (MCMOD) that may allow for future multi-family housing development. This zoning was done to fulfill the requirements of the MBTA Communities Law. Westford received $300,000 from the MBTA Communities Catalyst Fund to create a plan for enhancing pedestrian and bicyclist infrastructure in and around the MCMOD, with the aim of supporting existing businesses through multi-modal transportation improvements and transforming sprawling suburban office areas into a thriving mixed-use district through community-oriented development. The Town has contracted with Dodson & Flinker Landscape Architecture & Planning and BETA Group to create this plan.

Project Objectives

The Pedestrian Master Plan project seeks to establish a clear vision to ensure that incremental development projects are coordinated across lot lines and aligned with town and state investments. A guiding vision will help ensure an orderly transition from an area currently characterized by single-use auto-oriented design to a mixed-use walkable area, with a focus on pedestrian and bicycle connections and open spaces.

Opportunities to Participate

The Town of Westford is creating a plan for new and improved walking and bicycling facilities, and connections to open spaces in the Littleton Road area, as it was recently rezoned to allow for the possibility of multi-family housing development (MBTA Communities zoning).

The Plan will coordinate private development projects in the area and guide future town investments to create a cohesive network of sidewalks, bike facilities, trails, and open spaces.

Help shape the Plan! All are welcome to participate.
