What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is an age old idea, grounded in conservation and maintaining balance so that the ecosystem, and life on earth, persist indefinitely.  Today, sustainability marries the need for a new energy infrastructure, a new perspective on land use and management, and new consumption and disposal patterns, all precipitated by both the climate crisis and ongoing scientific discovery of how our waste products and behavior are impacting both human health, and the health of the planet.

Like many communities and governments across the globe, the nation, and the Commonwealth, Westford has a plan for local action to increase the health and resilience of our town and to minimize emissions. The Westford Climate Roadmap is a living document that encompasses energy, buildings, transportation, solid waste disposal and nature based solutions to our climate challenges, and provides steps for all members of the community to take, be they residents, businesses, employees or municipal staff.
