Blasting Notifications

Summary

  • Any blasting operations in Massachusetts require a permit from the local fire department.

  • Blasting operations must be completed by a licensed professional.

  • Blasting Companies must hold an Explosives Users Certificate.

  • Individual blasters must hold an Explosives Certificate of Competency.

  • Companies must have explosive magazine permits for permanent and vehicle mounted magazines.

  • Local fire departments issue Use and Handling Permits for specific blasting operations.

Blasting Operations in Westford

  • Any company conducting blasting operations within the Town of Westford is required to obtain a permit from the Westford Fire Prevention Office Monday-Friday between 7am and 3pm. 

  • The permit fee is $50.00. Checks must be made payable to the Town of Westford.

  • Once issued, permits are active for 30 days.

  • A Fire Department detail is required from the time explosives arrive on site until all blasting operations have been completed.

  • To schedule a detail please call 978-399-2345. DO NOT leave a voice mail as the detail may not be filled. 24 hour notice shall be given for any cancellations.

  • Blasting is allowed Monday-Friday between 8:00am and 4:00pm 4:00 PM excluding holidays.

  • Use of perchlorate materials are prohibited in the Town of Westford.

  • If you have concerns about blasting operations within the Town of Westford, you are encouraged to call 978-399-2345 and speak with a representative from Fire Prevention (during normal business hours) or the Shift Officer in Charge after hours.

  • In the event you experience property damage as a result of blasting operations, a report must be filed with the local fire department. Property owners experiencing damage from blasting operations conducted in Westford must call 978-399-2345 to file a report with Fire Prevention. 

  • Only in the event of damage to property will owners complete the FP-296 form which can be found below. Forms must be completed and returned to the fire department within 30 days of the alleged incident.
