We have been notified by the Westford Police Department that there are a lot of “Grandparent Scams” going on in Massachusetts currently. Many seniors have been targeted and paid thousands of dollars to scammers. The scam involves phone calls contacting seniors and imitating a grandchild who is supposedly in jail. The fake grandchild and/or their fake attorney ask the senior to get money to them for bail. They have many techniques that make the scenario very believable. We have heard from seniors who were previously aware of this scam, but still paid the money because the call was so believable. They make you think that you cannot tell anyone else so that you won’t call anyone in the family to confirm whether the call is real. Please don’t fall for this and always contact your family member directly at a phone number you know to be theirs.
