Fire Department History



The History of the Westford Fire Department is an extensive one, spanning over 114 years! Hundreds of people have served the town and its citizens as Firefighters and EMT’s on the Fire Department.

The Fire Department is proud of its years of dedicated service, loyalty, hard work and sacrifice of its members and their families.

The Westford Fire Department History begins long before it was officially established as “The Westford Fire Department”.

1892
The first recorded Fire related position established when the town appointed George Heywood and Edward Prescott as the First Forest Fire Wards.

1893
The Town voted to build three Fire Houses. Fire Houses were erected in Town Center, Graniteville and Forge Village. Also the Town appointed the First Fire Wards, who were in charge of all the Fire Houses and the Fire Equipment inside as well as act in their official capacity in case of Fire.
Between 1892 and 1893 the Town had 4 Fires…2 forest and 2 dwelling fires.

1907
The Town appropriated two hundred and fifty dollars to build a Fire House at Brookside Mill in Nabnasett and house Fire Equipment inside of it.

1908
The Town voted to establish an official Fire Department under the control of a Board of Fire Engineers. The Town established 3 Hose Companies, consisting of 20 men each. Each Fire House had one Hose Carriage; 800 feet of hose; 2 fire extinguishers; Ladders, Pails, and Tools.

1909
The Fire Department suffered it first Line of Duty Death on November 7, 1909. Lt. Daniel Harrington suffered critical Head Injuries while fighting a Barn Fire at J.A. Healy’s in Graniteville on November 1st. After being struck in the head, he was brought immediately home, where he was given the best medical care of the time by a local Doctor, but Lt. Harrington remained in a coma for 6 days and succumbed to his injuries on the 7th. Lt. Harrington was 29 years old and was recently married. He lived on Boston Road. His wife received 1,000 dollars from the Massachusetts Fireman’s Relief Fund.

1913
The department’s first Chief Engineer was appointed; Edward M. Abbott.

1914
A new Graniteville Fire House was built for the Choate Hose Company Number 2 on the south side of Cross Street at a cost of $1700.00

1915
Hoseman Albert Heywood was seriously injured in a fall from a roof during a chimney fire.

1916
Running water was put into the Fire Houses of Graniteville and Forge Village; electric lights were also put into the Forge Village Fire House. After requests from the Abbot Hose Company Number 1 in Town Center for new quarters, the Board of Fire Engineers and the Town approved plans to reconstruct the old Westford Academy into the new Center Fire House.
