The Westford Fire Department operates three Class 1, Type 3 Ambulances for Emergency Medical Care in Westford. One of these ambulances, Ambulance 11 is used mainly as a replacement when one of the main ambulances is down for maintenance or for storm coverage. The Ambulances are staffed by Firefighter/EMT’s 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and also our Paramedics. Up until recently, the Westford Ambulance Fund, through generous donations from Westford Residents, would actually purchase the Ambulances and emergency medical equipment to outfit them. As time goes on however, it is becoming increasingly difficult to raise enough funds through donations to afford the increasing cost of Ambulances and Emergency Medical equipment as well as the decrease in donations to the fund. The Ambulance Fund still takes donations and the money collected is used to offset the costs of medical equipment. Westford Fire Department purchased Westford’s first Ambulance in 1947 and put the new 1947 Cadillac in service at Fire Headquarters on March 9th. The Ambulances were paid for through donations from the Four-H Club in Westford. Donations can be made to the ambulance fund at: Westford Ambulance Fund P.O. Box 197 Peter Dennechuk, Treasurer.

The Westford Fire Department utilizes two hospital based Advanced Life Support Units in addition to our current Emergency Medical Services for people who are in need of serious and critical medical or traumatic care. When an emergency call is placed to the Fire Department, depending on the nature of the call, and the availability of our own ALS service at that time, Fire Alarm Operators will immediately dispatch not only an available department Ambulance, but also one of these ALS Units. Paramedics for ALS Units have the capability of providing Advanced Life Support including Advanced cardiac care, administering medications, I.V.s, Advanced Respitory Care and a variety of other advanced medical care prior to reaching the hospital. They provide the initial care that you would normally receive in the hospital Emergency Room, but much sooner, increasing the chances of faster recovery and survival. Westford Fire works with Greater Lowell EMS P-1 and P-100 and Pro EMS out of Emerson Hospital.

The Westford Fire Department utilizes Emergency Medical Helicopters which provide Advanced Life Support for people who are critically injured from a traumatic incident or have the possibility of critical injuries. These helicopters are staffed with a combination of nurses, paramedics or doctors with advanced emergency care. These helicopters are able to transport patients who may be in need of much needed trauma care to trauma centers, such as Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston or UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, quickly and safely.

Westford Fire uses the services of Boston Med Flight and UMass Memorial Life Flight of Worcester.

AMBULANCE SERVICE FEES WILL BE ASSESSED TO INDIVIDUALS' INSURANCE COMPANIES
